Feminism

by Marilyn Nelkin
The second half of the twentieth century in the United States saw the emergence of movements to guarantee equal rights and opportunities for women, minorities, and other groups. Some of the movements brought significant changes; others have made advances but not enough to fundamentally improve the lives of those involved.
Ms Marilyn Nelkin was in the forefront of many of these movements. After receiving her BA degree at Brandeis and her MA in Psychology at the University of Oregon, she went on to earn a Post Master’s Certificate in Administration at Pace University, New York. She chose to become a teacher of students between 5 and 14 years old and held positions East Harlem and the Bronx. From that position in the trenches she fought for Civil Rights for African-Americans, Civil Rights for Women, against the Vietnam War and fought for the unionization of workers and to include sex education in public schools. Even with all of this, much remains to be done.

Television Journalism
Lundi, 17 Octobre 2011 14:42
After Mr. Mark Owen finished university in Preston and Wales, he found his way into journalism. In England he worked at Granada television and ITV. In 2006 he became a Senior Presenter and Journalist with the English branch of France 24, where he has hosted just about every program the station offers and has interviewed such luminaries as the late Richard Holbrooke, the American super diplomat. He was the station's representative at the South African World Cup--from which he filed several superb commentaries on life in Soweto. Finally, English Rugby will never reach the peak it should because Mr. Owen chose journalism over participating in the sport he loves.
He will discuss his career--how he became a television journalist, the differences and similarities of working in the UK and in France, the degree of freedom of the press in television journalism, and he will answer questions about television journalism as a career--and anything else that is of interest to the students.

Racism in the United States
Lundi, 03 Octobre 2011 12:17
Luther Carpenter (PhD Harvard) is a Professor Emeritus at the City University of New York and has spent his career dealing with governments and their successes or failures in dealing with social problems. He has just finished a history of French social and economic policies and structures since 1945, and how people and elites use them to obtain (modest) comfort and (more) social peace. He submitted it to Cornell University Press. He also writes articles on France for the magazine Dissent. He is an unabashed but nuanced francophile.
Dr. Carpenter will talk about racism in the United States.
